INTRODUCTION
WHAT ARE HISTORIC TAX CREDITS?
Historic Tax Credits are offered by state and federal governments as incentives to individuals and organizations to preserve historic properties. They are intended to encourage positive development while also preserving the architectural and historical character of neighborhoods and individual buildings. These credits are financial incentives that allow property owners to claim a percentage of renovation expenses for eligible historic buildings as direct credits on income taxes. The credits can be used over a period of years, and they can also be sold to other individuals or developers.
In Arkansas, both Federal and State tax credit programs are administered by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP). To take advantage of these programs, proposed projects must meet specific historic preservation standards and undergo a certification review process.
This resource page is intended to help simplify the tax credit process for anyone interested in saving money on building repairs while preserving their historic neighborhood. The majority of this information focuses on the Arkansas State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit for owner-occupied properties. The credit percentage is tiered based on the population of the location where the project takes place. $5,000 is the minimum required investment, and the maximum eligible cost is $100,000.
