The institution that would become the Holman School began with funds from the Julius Rosenwald Foundation in 1924. The Rosenwald structure was replaced with a masonry building in the early 1940s and a second building and gymnasium were constructed in 1955. Named after long-time teacher John Holman and his wife, the Holman School operated as a school for African-American students until 1970, following the desegregation of the Stuttgart School District. In 1996 the Holman Heritage Development Corporation acquired the building for use as a cultural and historic landmark and a community education and health center. IN 2008, straight line winds from a tornado damaged the roof and subsequent water damage has made parts of the building unusable. Currently a new roof has been installed but much work is needed to return the building to its former glory.
